Senator Marco Rubio joined Chuck Todd on Meet the Press this morning to discuss the Republican primary that officially kicks off tomorrow in Iowa. Todd asked Rubio to respond to an ad the Cruz campaign is running against Rubio that attacks him for supporting Cap and Trade in 2006 and 2007. Rubio replied, “I was the speaker of the House and I said, “There is a chance that the federal government will pass cap and trade. I’m not in favor of it. But if they do, we have to be prepared to comply with that requirement, even if we don’t like it. And I don’t want it to cost the state of Florida money to have to comply.”
He continued, “Everyone knew it. The Democrats knew that position. And when Charlie Crist proposed cap and trade, I was the first person to speak out against it in a full op-ed in The Miami Herald.”
Rubio added that, “But, you know what, this gets at sort of what I think is the challenge for all of the candidates on both sides, is you’re basically saying, “Look, you’ve got to sometimes govern with what you have, not with what you want.”
